Sheebah Karungi Speaks Out On Sexual Harassment

Singer Sheebah Karungi has on Tuesday opened up on being sexually harassed.

The diva who was part of the dance production dubbed ‘I am Female Dance Production,’ a dance project that was organized by Uganda’s top professional female dance trio RozViccyCathy (RVC) production.

It featured renowned city beauties  Uganda’s finest Comedian Ann Kansiime, Radio personalities, Ms. Deedan, Malaika Nyanzi together with Diana, Nunu Umuringa Butare, singer Rachel Kay and Flavia Oketcho aka Flirsh.

According to the group, they believed that they could actually play a role in highlighting issues and challenges that Females are always subjected to in different communities through a dance.

The dance revolved around five topics; Gender Inequality (inequality in work places), Domestic Violence, access to Girl child education, sexual harassment (mostly in the entertainment industry) and Women emancipation.

It was in respect to those topics, that Sheebah was given to address sexual harassment, which she really did very well, making every one listening, feel bad about the sexual harassments that women go through in their daily lives.

Sheebah recalled an incident some time back, where she was exposed by her boss, whom never wanted to pay her yet she had worked for him for some time, without pay.

“I had soo much going on, but this gentleman couldn’t just pay me, he needed me to ‘FLASH’ my boobs for him to pay me, yet I had worked for this money, so that’s sexual harassment.

When I am going for performances and people are not being respectful, touching me inappropriately, I am a woman…. I don’t deserve that, I deserve respect and be treated equally, with same respect as anyone else deserves.”

Sheebah revealed that she has on several occasions, encountered sexual harassments, which come in many different forms.

“I have experienced soo much situations close to the first one, you write proposals very decently, moreover you take time, one or even three months preparing them, you go to someone’s office, wanting him to give you just only 5 minutes of his time, these people always make it difficult.

They want you to take their business cards and meet them later for dinner in Hotels, lodge or elsewhere….sexual Harassment is real and should stop,” Sheebah said.

The ‘Beera Nange’ songstress called upon fellow females to always speak out about such infidelities when faced with any, from either workplaces or any where else.

“If you are exposed to any form of sexual harassment; you are in a job and your boss demands to have sex with you so as to keep your position, that’s not right, it’s not worth it, you should be respected, talk about it, don’t fear, tell a friend and by so doing, we will be able to stop this vice.”

She went ahead, citing an example in the entertainment industry, where producers, promoters and managers among others, take advantage of artists. They want to sleep with them simply because some of them may not afford to have production fee and many more.
